SUMMER HOMES AMONG THE MOUNTAINS ON THE NEW YORK ONTARIO & WESTERN RY. 1908. New York: New York, Ontario & Western Railway, 1908. 25x18 cm (large octavo), pp. [1-6] 7 [8-9] 10-138 [139] [140: printer's imprint], profusely illustrated, large folded map, publisher's tan wrappers printed in orange, white and black, side stapled. First edition. An elaborate, well-illustrated brochure (printed by the American Bank Note Company) promoting summer tourism along the tracks of the New York, Ontario & Western Railway in Orange, Ulster, Sullivan and Delaware counties, a "vast expanse of rolling country" that includes "almost countless pure spring water lakes" and "some four hundred miles of famous trout streams ..." The brochure includes hundreds of detailed descriptions of tourist accommodations -- from private homes to resorts -- near each of the NYO&W's stations. An invaluable regional snapshot of the heyday of summer vacation tourism by rail, before the Good Roads Movement and increased reliability of automobiles slowly reduced passenger traffic on America's railroads. The NYO&W, was a regional railroad founded in 1868. The last train ran in 1957, after which the railroad was ordered liquidated by a U.S. bankruptcy judge. It was the first Class I U.S. railroad to be abandoned in its entirety. Wrappers a bit soiled, a very good, internally fine, copy. OCLC reports one copy (Union College). (#178886).
