(#178920) DEATH VALLEY WINTER TOURS REGION OF MYSTERY, DESOLATION AND GRANDEUR BY RAIL AND MOTOR UNION PACIFIC [cover title]. California, Inyo County, Death Valley.

DEATH VALLEY WINTER TOURS REGION OF MYSTERY, DESOLATION AND GRANDEUR BY RAIL AND MOTOR UNION PACIFIC [cover title]. N.p. [Los Angeles?]: Union Pacific, [1929]. Single sheet, 15.5x45 cm, folded to make 10 panels. 8 illustrations from photographs, 1 map. An unusual promotional piece. Travelers would travel via Union Pacific and Tonopah- Tidewater Railways and once in Death Valley by motor stage (which, judging from the cover, appears to be able to accommodate eight passengers). One hour of the entire package was on the Death Valley Railroad. Once there they had their choice of two lodging houses; the Death Valley View Hotel in Ryan or the considerably more famous Furnace Creek Inn. The Furnace Creek Inn Package was the more expensive of the two. It is still extant, in part, but all of Ryan is now deserted. Ryan was founded by the Pacific Coast Borax Company in 1914 and the area was heavily mined until 1928 whereupon it was turned into a tourist attraction and hosted a hotel. When an active mine, ore from the mines was transported to Ryan by the narrow 24-inch-gauge Baby Gauge Railroad. That baby gauge railroad was a highlight of this tour and all got to take a ride in the comically small train (reading note courtesy of Nat DesMarais Rare Books). The leaflet includes a full panel map, "Map of Death Valley," and eight photographic illustrations of which four are credited to Stephen H. Willard. The printer's imprint on the outer rear panel reads "10-29--5000--Bert Rose Co." A fine copy. No copies reported by OCLC. (#178920).
