DEATH VALLEY THE VALLEY OF LIFE STOVE PIPE WELLS HOTEL AND COTTAGES. [Los Angeles]: Stove Pipe Wells Hotel and Cottages, n.d. [circa 1935]. Single sheet, 42.5x40, folded to make 16 panels, yellow, red and pink, 4 illustrations from photographs, 2 maps. First edition of this promotional piece of Death Valley tourist literature. Sixteen-panel folded brochure in color. When unfolded the brochure has a fine map of Death Valley and the surrounding area and displays the routes into the Valley from Trona, Lone Pine and Rhyolite. In 1925, entrepreneur Bob Eichmann began construction of the hotel at Stovepipe Wells, along with a scenic toll road through Death Valley. This effectively was the beginning of tourism to Death Valley which was previously viewed as just a intolerably hot and dangerous mining area (reading note courtesy of Nat DesMarais Rare Books). A fine copy. No copies reported by OCLC. (#178921).
