THE SCIENCE-FANTASY PUBLISHERS: A CRITICAL AND BIBLIOGRAPHIC HISTORY. Westminster, Maryland: Mirage Press, 1991. Large octavo, pp. [1-2] [i-ii] iii-xxviii 1-744, double columns, illustrations, cloth. Third edition, revised and enlarged. The most comprehensive bibliography and critical history of the specialty publishers and amateur presses whose sole or principal activity was the publication of fantastic fiction (or nonfiction books on the genre) and whose output (in most cases) included at least one hardbound book. The third edition, a massive revision and expansion of The Index to the Science-Fantasy Publishers... (1966), covers nearly 200 private presses and specialty publishers active between 1926 (The Recluse Press) and 1991. Although this work has been criticized for its bibliographical errors and omissions and for its anecdotal commentary, it is still the major source for information on the books produced by the specialty publishers and serves as a useful overview of the social milieu that gave rise to this publishing phenomenon. Anatomy of Wonder (1995) 7-3. Burgess, Reference Guide to Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror 237. A fine copy without dust jacket as issued. (#178942).
