SKETCHES OF SCENERY AND MANNERS IN THE UNITED STATES. By the Author of the "Northern Traveller." New-York: Published by A. T. Goodrich, 1829. 12mo, pp. [i-iii] iv [v-viii] [9] 10-188, flyleaves at front and rear, nine inserted plates, publisher's blue boards with red leather shelf back, spine panel lettered and ruled in gold. First edition, first printing. A miscellany of literary and travel sketches. There is a chapter on the White Mountains, pages 59-80, and they are also the subject of an appendix, pages [185]-188; there are two engraved illustrations of the range. A brief chapter on Saratoga and the Congress Spring occupies pages [147]-149. Additionally, there are travel sketches about the Connecticut River valley and the view from Mount Holyoke, and climbing the 2030 foot Red Hill (here called Red Mountain), in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire, just south of the White Mountains, and today part of the Red Hill Conservation Area. The frontispiece is "View of the Ruins of Ticonderoga Forts on Lake Champlain," but the lake is not a topic found in this book. Other sketches include "New Species of Travellers" and "Relics of the Revolution," the latter focused on the moral character of the elderly men who fought for freedom in the American Revolution. Howes D 608. Sabin 21540. This work appears to have been overlooked by Bent. Binding rubbed and scuffed, scattered foxing throughout, still a very good copy. Provenance: Gift label of Mrs. M. Schuyler Elliot affixed to the front paste-down, scattered library stamps of the American Museum of Natural History, Central Park, New York. Scarce in commerce. (#178970).
