New edition. A reprint of the 1842 expanded edition of TWICE-TOLD TALES save for Hawthorne's new 6-page "preface" dated 11 January 1851. The first of Hawthorne's three major collections of short fiction published in his lifetime; a collection of sketches and tales, mostly allegories and moralistic fantasies, including "The Gray Champion," "The Wedding Knell," "The Minister's Black Veil," "Dr. Heidegger's Experiment" and "The White Old Maid" (the last collected in volume two of the 1842 expanded edition). The contents of 1842 edition, containing twenty-one additional sketches and tales, were assembled and, in some cases, revised by Hawthorne. 2000 copies of this 1851 edition were printed.
