When Sequoia National Park was established in 1890 there were numerous private in holdings within its boundaries, particularly in the Giant Forest region. Congress made no effort to obtain these holdings until 1915 when an appropriation was made to acquire lands within Giant Forest. These funds were supplemented by donations, the largest of which came from the National Geographic Society, and by a special tax levy in Tulare County. Most of the private holdings were purchased between 1915 and 1920. The park enlargement occurred in 1926 and added the Kern River region and Mount Whitney to Sequoia. This leaflet comprises highlights of park history, quotations of John Muir and John C. Merriam, and a program of events. Old vertical and horizontal folds, front panel dusty, a good copy. (#179274).
