San Francisco, January 1861. 23 cm, single issue, pictorial wrappers, sewn. THE CALIFORNIA MOUNTAINEER, edited by Henry S. Brooks, a California pioneer and journalist, was a short-lived monthly literary and regional magazine launched in January 1861 in Chinese Camp, Tuolumne County, California. It featured original literary pieces, local color essays, and regional commentary. Contemporary local papers praised it as a superior and highly meritorious regional publication for the rural foothill communities of California's Sierra Nevada. Following the seventh and final issue (July 1861), THE CALIFORNIA MOUNTAINEER merged with HUTCHINGS' ILLUSTRATED CALIFORNIA MAGAZINE (an early California periodical founded by James M. Hutchings in 1856). The combined publication briefly continued under the name CALIFORNIA MAGAZINE AND MOUNTAINEER before concluding its run. This 64-page debut issue of THE CALIFORNIA MOUNTAINEER was largely written by its editor, Henry S. Brooks. Front wrapper missing, lower left margin stained (diminishing to nothing about halfway through the issue), old vertical mailing fold, a good copy. Issues of THE CALIFORNIA MOUNTAINEER are rare and none have been digitized. (#179488).
