TWO TYPEWRITTEN LETTERS ON THE MAGAZINE'S LETTERHEAD TO "DEAR MR. ANDERSON" [LESTER A. ANDERSON], THE FIRST DATED 17 SEPTEMBER 1932, THE SECOND DATED 3 DECEMBER 1932, BOTH SIGNED BY EDITOR ALLEN GLASSER. Both letters refer to Anderson's contributions to THE TIME TRAVELLER which were accepted and a column set up for publication, but then returned to him because "THE TIME TRAVELLER has been taken over by SCIENCE FICTION DIGEST ... They will probably be glad to use it, but I did not care to transfer it to them without your authorization. You may submit it yourself, if you choose." THE TIME TRAVELLER has been called the first "true" fan magazine by Sam Moskowitz, Robert Madle and other science fiction historians, although a very strong case can be made for Allen Glasser's six mimeographed issues of THE PLANET (July 1930-December 1930). The first issue of THE TIME TRAVELLER was published in early January 1932. The first two issues were mimeographed, the remainder were typeset and printed by Conrad H. Ruppert, who was to print many other amateur publications in this early age of science fiction fandom. THE TIME TRAVELLER was published monthly through September, with a small four-page Winter issue announcing it would merge with SCIENCE FICTION DIGEST, which commenced publication in September 1932 and was to fulfill all unexpired subscriptions. "But THE TIME TRAVELLER had left its mark behind. It had been the first sizable central rallying-point in the science fiction world, and this had given the more active fans opportunity to segregate and come into mutual contact. The seeds had been sown, and they proved be far more prepotent than anyone then would have thought possible." - Moskowitz, The Immortal Storm, pp. 13-15. Letters tanned, old mailing creases, both very good. (#179853).
