Two of the four novelettes, 'Samways Island' and 'Ultimus,' concern a floating island which chances upon a conflict between imaginary nations (Fatland and Fatterland; thinly disguised England and Germany) and brings the war to a halt. The third, 'Gynecologia,' describes Fatland of the future while the fourth, 'Out of Work,' is a fantasy set in Fatland." - Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy, p. 47.
